Search engine optimization (SEO) depends on backlinks to be successful. When Google (and other search engines) determine what sites to rank—and what order to rank them—they consider the relevance of each page, as well as its “authority” or trustworthiness. This authority measure is determined by the number and quality of links you have pointing to your site. However, you can’t just spam backlinks pointing to your domain and expect to rank higher. In fact, thanks to Google’s high standards for content quality and low threshold for spam, that behavior will likely get your penalized. Fortunately, link building isn’t quite as complex as it seems

Tried and True Tricks from America's Test Kitchen Just listened to this podcast this morning; if you like to cook, you'll hang on every word. The mission of America's Test Kitchen is simple: to make "recipes that work." The syndicated PBS cooking show, hosted by Christopher Kimball, simplifies recipes in ways that home chefs can easily replicate with a fairly high degree of success. Khan Academy I fell in love with this site the day I heard Sal Khan being interviewed by Jason Calacanis of This Week in Startups. The Khan Academy makes online web learning a cinch. They're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. All of the site's resources are available to anyone. It doesn't matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. The Khan Academy's materials and resources are available

Create Jobs for USA Starbucks has teamed up with the Opportunity Finance Network to create and sustain jobs. Create Jobs for USA will provide capital grants to select Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). The CDFIs will provide financing to underserved community businesses which include small business loans, community center financing, housing project financing and microfinance. Starbucks has seeded this project with a $5 million contribution from the Starbucks Foundation. You can assist this effort by donating just $5 or more at any Starbucks or online. When you do, you’ll receive a red, white and blue wristband with the message “Indivisible”. HERE'S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS PROGRAM: you're

Google Music (Note: look out for Google's formal introduction of Google Music on November 16) Upload up to 20,000 songs from your personal music collection to listen from any computer or on your phone (Android), even offline. All for free. My only complaint: does not play with iPhone like it does with Android. If you’re seeing this on November 16, click the ‘See Today’s Site‘  link and give it a rating from 1-10. Mike

Online Business Systems If you're searching for an online business system (or PROCESS) or you're contemplating starting an online business, Rich Schefren's 'Internet Business Manifesto' is a must read.  Schefren's guidance saved me when I felt like I was drowning in a sea of TOO MUCH INFORMATION. I still reread portions of this valuable guide 2-3 times per year (after first coming across it nearly 6 years ago!). Download it, it's free, and it will be the best time you spend in support of your online business goals. If you’re seeing this on November 15, click the ‘See Today’s Site‘  link and give it a
