The Cool Site of the Year Awards were bestowed at Webster Hall in New York recently, and eBay, the online auction house headquartered in San Jose, won Coolest Shopping Site of the Year. But eBay didn't have anyone there to pick up the prize, a void into which Danny Digital was delighted to jump. Digital, publisher of the zine Smug, took the stage, made an acceptance speech and made off with the prize, a plaque and stand.
Now he's selling it on eBay, with such a winning sales pitch -- "It is made of the finest Lucite, carved from the uncharted peaks of Mount Lucite in Kenya... This puppy is built to last!" -- that with a few days left to go, bidding is up to $5,100. Digital says he's so surprised at that amount that he's decided to donate his earnings "to a lefty, humanist charity."
Kristen Seuell of eBay says the company might have been annoyed if Digital had sold the trophy for profit but is happy to have him sell it for charity. "We're thrilled that he was able to pick up our award," she said, but puzzled as to why the bidding's gone so high. "This guy probably has a lot of friends, or there are a lot of people interested in having an award of eBay's."
