Freakonomics Radio

best of the web today - freaknomics radioToday’s Cool Site of the Day is the home of one of my favorite podcasts, Freakonomics. I listen to this show every week during the morning commute (via Stitcher, of course). Just another example of how we can be educated and entertained at the same time. When you visit the site, search for the recent show about what nuns and Bo Jackson have in common….or don’t search–here’s the link.

Science Websites for Kids

science websites for kidsToday’s Cool Site of the Day makes a point about education…and kids and science. You see, I believe that the future of learning will, more and more, rely on brain food coming from many different sources (not just books and teacher lectures). Case in point: I’m driving in the car the other day listening to my regular cue of awesome podcasts (via Stitcher, of course, and dominated by stories reported on NPR) when this item is revealed: “The Mystery Of The Slithering Stones“. Turns out huge stones have been slithering across the dry desert floor in California’s Death Valley to the mystery of all for over 60 years. A mystery just recently solved.

Anyway, this is a truly fascinating story and one that, I’m sure, would captivate the minds of children everywhere and serve as an excellent teaching tool. So, just as the Khan Academy has been showing us; learning can happen via various sources any time of day and become a focus of discussion and experimentation with indirect teacher participation.

School Should Start Later

OSGOOD FILE - teens and sleepToday’s Cool Site of the Day is a short but important podcast from the Osgood File about the need for school to start later so teens can get more sleep. Overall, The Osgood File is one of my favorite podcasts — it’s usually the first one I listen to (via Stitcher, of course) when I start my morning drive.
