Apprentice Plan of a Twitter Twenius
Not that long ago setting up a web site was the proper thing to do. Then overnight it seemed, blogs became the popular thing and everyone clamored to create their blog and start blogging. But that was yesterday, and today is today. All the talk today is about “Social Media” with Twitter and Facebook rolling off the tongue of young and old alike. It’s the newest phase in online communication, it’s the newest phase in community, and as you might expect, it’s beginning to catch the eye of businesses and marketers too.
Everyone agrees Twitter has come from out of nowhere, establishing itself as a popular mode of interactive communication in the online and mobile world. Movie Stars, athletes, government officials and famous names from @Deepak_Chopra to @AmberBenson to @JoeBiden to @WilWheaton and others, are all madly in love with Twitter.
However Twitter is much more intimate than that. What a lot of people do not realize is that Twitter is a local phenomena too. More likely than not, your town government is on Twitter, your local TV and radio news, your local Fire Fighters, your library, your local college, even the gal that mowed your lawn last week. If they aren’t on Twitter today, they’ll likely be on tomorrow.
But there’s another force making its mark on Twitter. It’s a tidal shift of a more serious nature where businesses and entrepreneurs are beginning to tap the enormous potential of Twitter. When you observe successful companies such as: @MarriottIntl, @SouthwestAir or @wienermobile begin lining up on the Twitter bandwagon, it’s definitely time to take notice.
It is likely that this “craze” boils down to the time tested fact that a lot of business actually occurs in social gatherings, at cocktail parties, on the golf course, or at numerous other social events. Now, through Twitter it’s become possible, if not down right easy, to benefit from an online version of a non-stop 24 hour, 7 day a week cocktail party of unimaginable proportions.
The facts and news stories are thought provoking:
- “TechCrunch CEO states “about 1% of our total traffic comes from twitter.” ~BusinessWeek. Do the math and that’s over 14,000 unique visitors per month.
- “Unique visitors to Twitter increased 1,382 percent year-over-year, from 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008 to 7 million in February 2009, making it the fastest growing site in the Member Communities category for the month. Zimbio and Facebook followed, growing 240 percent and 228 percent, respectively.”
- “One in three marketers indicated identifying the best practices, measuring results and knowing where to begin as their top questions when marketing with social media.”
What’s the meaning of all this? It means that if you are an entrepreneur or in any business, you must not hesitate to head over to Twitter and set up a Twitter account.
Easy enough?
Well, not quite. Once you have your Twitter account opened, that’s when the simplicity goes out the window. It’s a very very simple concept, but like a Rubik’s Cube, unless you know WHAT to do, you’ll soon be scratching your head.
Fortunately, there is help. Internet strategist and social media marketing expert, Dan Hollings has spent the past year researching and testing Twitter strategies for business. Along the way, Dan wrote 100 extremely helpful Twitter tips for business. Next he created a browser toolbar for Mac or PC that puts over 235 Twitter tools, tips and apps within one-click of your Twitter activities. Recently, he released his “tour de force” Twitter training program called, “Twitter Twenius” (that’s Twitter-talk for genius).
Here is a sample Twitter tip, to from the hundreds Dan has originated:
Socially bookmark your better Twitter postings (I’m talking individual tweet status pages). Yes they have SEO value. Services such as Twitchboard and Fleck Lite automate social bookmarking in different ways. You can of course go heavy-duty with services like Onlywire or SocialPoster.
Without doubt, there’s significantly more to learn, however if you’re looking for the money in Twitter or a way to turn-on the Twitter rocket boosters on all your marketing campaigns whether in your local area or around the world, I highly recommend Twitter Twenius.
Stay tuned for Twitter or Die…you can bet I’ll be interviewing Dan about Twitter and his TwitterTwenius program. Brilliant.
